This year so far sees motorbike sales in general down 2.9% in comparison with sales in 2010. Despite optimistic predictions that the summer season would see a boost in sales to compensate for this slump, sales do not seem to have picked up. In fact, figures released in June 2011 showed motorcycle sales for that month at a total of only 8,709 bikes in comparison to the figure of 9,226 recorded a year earlier.
In spite of this drop in general motorcycle sales, scooters and adventure sport motorbikes have in fact shown a rise in sales, with 1,211 adventure sport bikes, 1,370 scooters (below 125cc) and 1,530 maxi-scooters being sold in June alone.
However, the motorbike market as a whole has shrunk since 2010; let’s hope it’s a temporary blip and 2012 sees a happy new year for motorbike sales. It will certainly be interesting to see if rising fuel prices and the cost of running cars will cause motorcycle sales to rise once again, and see commuters converting to the two-wheeler in their thousands.
