This follow on documentary sees McGregor and Boorman take on the journey from John O’ Groats to Cape Town, again on BMWs. This time the BMW R1200GS Adventure was selected – as the new and improved version of the R1150GS used in the Long Way Round, it was its natural successor. The BMWs had certainly proved themselves on these trips, as aside from some inevitable breakdowns and injuries to the bikes, most of them made it the whole way round.
Ewan’s wife, Eve, got involved this time. Learning to ride in preparation for the trip, she proved herself a hardy rider taking multiple falls and bumps into her stride. It seems more and more women are getting into off-road biking and proving that it’s not all about brawn, technical skill and focus are often what makes ladies great at cross country riding! Off-road riding skill seems only to come with time, practice and confidence. Off-road courses give a great starting point for this type of riding, it can be pretty damn scary the first time you ride on rough terrain as passing your motorbike test requires nothing of the sort.
There’s talk of another ‘Long Way…’ documentary being produced this year, let’s hope it’s just as good as the last…
