American Ben Spies Wears the Crown
On October 25 Ben Spies was crowned as champion at the World Superbike Championship held in Portimao, Portugal at the Algarve Circuit. Mr. Spies won the beginning race on his Yamaha R1 and finished in fifth place in the following race. This was a remarkable end to the season for Spies, a 25-year-old racer from Dallas. Spies adds the World Superbike crown to a record that includes being the three-time AMA Superbike Champion.

This event concluded one of the greatest individual seasons by a competitor in the history of the series. Spies apprehended the title with 14 wins out of 28 starts and also broke the record for acquiring the most pole positions with 11 for the season. In this single season of racing, Ben Spies is in a tie for 12th place for the all-time World Superbike career leader.
This is the first American rider to win the World Superbike title since Colin Edwards, another rider from Texas won the title in 2002. Edward will join Spies on the Tech 3 Yamaha MotoGP team in 2010. Spies will finish out the MotoGP season in Valencia on November 8 as a wildcard entry.
