Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo took the chequered flag in front of his home crowd at the Spanish Grand Prix, finishing 5 seconds ahead of championship rival Dani Pedrosa in Catalunya.
With 23 laps left Ben Spies looked to be dominating proceedings but made a mistake, ran wide and dropped his bike in the dirt. This put paid to what had been his most promising start to a race this season.
Pedrosa, who now trails Lorenzo by 20 points in the standings, admitted his frustration at failing to register his first win of the campaign.
“I had some issues at the end. I wanted to be faster and I expected to be better,” he told BBC Sport. I did my best in the middle of the race, tried to attack, came back strong because he pushed me wide in the first turn. I’m a little bit disappointed today. I wanted to win pretty bad.”
