Tuesday, December 28 2010

Barry Briggs MBE, four-time winner of the World Speedway Championship took an innovative approach to raising money for injured speedway riders back in the spring of the year. Barry sold ‘Ride Share Certificates’ that sold for £100 each with one of the tickets being drawn at the end of the ride for the prize of Barry’s Yamaha WR250R.

Barry’s plan turned out to be a great idea as the generosity of 100 people raised £10,000 of the amazing total of £69,000 that Briggo’s ride produced. 12 riders were given cheques that were over £5,000 each, a welcome site in the midst of the Christmas season. The remaining balance of the funds that were raised was given to Sport Relief.

As the funds raised were delegated, the drawing for Briggo’s bike also took place. The winner of the Yamaha WR250R was James Easter of Ipswich. James, who is with speedway tour operator Travel Plus Tours picked-up his newly won bike on December 17 at the Yamaha Motor UK’s Surrey headquarters. Those there to present James with the bike were Briggo and Andrew Smith, the Vice President of Yamaha Europe.

James was happy that he won the bike but stated that he has no intentions of keeping the historic machine, stating that he felt undeserving of the prize. He pointed out that the bike was a collector’s piece that should go to someone who has the time and passion for biking that would get the most enjoyment out of the bike. James went on to say that he planned on auctioning the bike off and giving the proceeds back to Briggo for his worthy charity.
