After damaging a finger of his right hand during the 2011 season, John Hopkins suffered from numerous complications and underwent multiple operations in attempts to promote healing. However, following his most recent unsuccessful surgery, he opted to stop treatment and instead to have the top of his finger amputated.
It seemed to be an easy decision for Hopkins as his consultant laid out the options: continue painful treatments in the hope of recovery, or remove the damaged fingertip and be back on his bike within a month.
A simple choice for Hopkins- with the start of the season just around the corner, he decided he was in danger of jeopardising his World Superbike debut with the Crescent Suzuki team if he did not opt for the amputation.
Post surgery, John Hopkins: “Apart from the actual pain of the surgery, I must say that it’s feeling better already. I now have about 10 days until I can start physio again. I know the bike well and I’ve raced at Phillip Island before, so at least I will not be starting from scratch.”
