Although from the Gilera brand these scooters may be all that remain in production today, the Gilera name still carries a lengthy and successful history …
Gilera is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer, founded in 1909 by 22-year old mechanic Giuseppe Gilera. The first motorcycle to bear the Gilera name was the VT317, which was produced the same year.
After acquiring the rights to the Rodine four-cylinder engine in 1935, Gilera went on to produce a series of four-stoke engine machines ranging between 100cc to 500cc. The most famous of these, the Saturno, was produced in 1939.
Post Second World War, Gilera was the name to be reckoned with in motorbike racing and won a total of 44 international Grand Prix titles before its exit from racing in 1957
In 1969, the company was purchased by world’s 4th largest motorcycle manufacturer Piaggio, makers of the iconic Vespa Scooter. It developed 49cc-125cc two-stoke bikes as well as continuing to develop the Gilera four-stoke range.
In 1993, Piaggio closed the Gilera factory, bringing to an end to over 84 years of successful motorbike manufacturing. Today, Piaggio continues to produce small-displacement motor scooters bearing the proud Gilera name.
