The win at Estoril, which was number eight for Lorenzo’s 2010 Championship winning season, beat Lorenzo’s rival and fellow Fiat Yamaha rider Valentino as the two riders went to war early on in the race. Lorenzo however was able to take the lead in the race on the 17th lap of the 28-lap event; after taking the lead Lorenzo didn’t look back, but went on to win the race 8.629s in front of Rossi. The victory was Lorenzo’s first one since the Brno round and has Lorenzo still in position to better Rossi’s 2008 points record of 373 point in a single MotoGP season with one more round yet to be run.

Rossi took a lonely second place on his factory M1 as he won his 10th podium at Estoril in 11 trips to the circuit coming in nearly 18 seconds in front of Dovizioso. Dovizioso had locked horns with Marco Simoncelli in an exciting encounter right to the end for the final podium position. Dovizioso came out on the winning side of the encounter by a margin of 0.059s as he won his seventh podium of the season.
