Laverty Down But Still in Title race Following Silverstone

Tuesday, September 28 2010

As Michael Laverty continues his campaign for the British Superbike Championship, his day at Silverstone in the penultimate round of the 2010 championship was one of mixed emotions. Laverty, the Relentless by TAS Suzuki title challenger was able to capture a third place finish in the first race of the day, a race that had to be restarted because of the weather conditions at the circuit. In the opening laps of the race, Laverty led the pack; however, due to the condition of his rear Pirelli he had to fall back and settle for a third place finish. This race brought Laverty to only eight points away from Tommy Hill, who is leading the series.

If race one was a ray of sunshine for Laverty, race two was a dark rain cloud. Laverty started the second race from the number two spot on the grid and went for the hole shot in spite of dangerous conditions; Laverty believed that he was going to make it to the top step for the third time this year. However, misfortune stepped in as Laverty saw his hopes of a first place finish all but dashed to pieces as he lost traction in turn one and crashed his machine. Laverty made a valiant attempt to finish the race as he climbed back aboard his wrecked bike, but the bike had sustained so much damage that he had to concede after only a few more corners. Even though Laverty crashed out in the second race, he still has a shot at the title, as he is only 19 points away from the top spot with three more races to be completed.
