Motocross began as an off-shoot of Trials riding, with a stronger focus on speed than the more skillful tests of balance and stricter point scoring systems of Trials. Nowadays, Motorcross itself has many sub-divisions including indoor events such as Supercross and events such as Freestyle Motocross, involving jumps and aerial tricks; the riders being judged on their performance style and the difficulty of the tricks performed.
So, how to get into motocross? Well, probably one of the first things to do is to get researching, try out a few bike models and see what’s best for you. As with anything, you’re probably best starting small and building yourself up – especially if you’ve never tried off-roading before (it’s a far cry from laid back road biking). You’ll find there are loads of motocross tracks nationwide, so once you’re kitted out you can start riding and getting that crucial experience of sharing the track with others and following the rules of the sport. One thing to remember is that it’s illegal to race MX bikes on public areas of land and on the whole, these bikes aren’t road legal so be sure not to end up in a sticky situation with the law- or your MX dream might well be over!
