Cagvia

Cagiva has a rich history of successful affiliations with some of the biggest motorcycle brands on the planet, but the company did not start out producing motorbikes

Founded in 1950 by Giovanni Castigioni in Northern Italy, Cagiva started life producing small metal components. In 1978 the company bought into Harley-Davidson, taking over their motorcycle factory in Varese and, with it, the right to continue producing many Harley bikes under the Cagiva name.

By the following year they were producing 40,000 motorbikes, producing eight models with two-stroke engines ranging from 125cc to 350cc, including small, fast screamer model bike, the 125cc Mito. Cagiva later entered the big displacement market with the introduction of two Elefant trail bikes with 750cc and 900cc Ducati four-stroke v-twin engines.

Between 1985 and 1991, Cagiva made a series of strategic buyouts of Ducati, Moto Morini, and Huqvama while also purchasing the trademarks for the MV Augusta brand. And in 2000 Cagiva introduced the 1000cc Raptor, designed with the help of Ducati designer Miguel Galluzzi, a stylish, naked bike powered by a Suzuki TL1000 engine.

Today, after a strategic reconstruction in 1999, the company operates as MV Augusta Motor S.p.A., comprising Cagiva and Huqvama. It remains under the ownership of Harley-Davidson and Giovani’s sons, Claudio and Gianfranco Castigioni.
