Motorcyclists are advised to do a precautionary check on their cycles tyres for safety purposes. If a bike is not stored the right way during the winter, the tyres on the motorcycle can suffer rubber deterioration that can result in unsafe or illegal tyres. In order to help riders to know if their bike tyres are safe, there are hundreds of tyre dealerships and motorcycle repair shops providing free safety checks on tyres during the April bike tyre safety month.

The chairman of TyreSafe, Stuart Jackson, emphasized how critical it was to check a bike’s tyres condition before taking off on a motorcycle ride. Jackson pointed out that the tyre was the only point of contact on the road, therefore it is vitally important to make sure that the tyres are in healthy condition before riding. Jackson also commented that it was especially important to check the tyres at the start of spring, since the motorcycles can sometimes spend the winter months in storage, which can sometimes result in the tyres rubber cracking and deteriorating in other ways that can make the motorcycle unsafe.
If a biker is going to inspect their own tyres they should check the tread and the sidewall areas closely, cracking found in these areas is a sign the tyres have been on the bike for an exceptionally long time. In addition to cracking due to usage, rubber can deteriorate due to improper storage over the winter months. If there are cracks that are visible in the tyres, riders should seek professional help or replace their bike’s tyres.
Bikers should also make sure that there are not any foreign objects in their cycle’s tyres, and check the tread depth of their tyres. Tread depth is important as in it helps the tyre to have traction on a water-filled road. There also legal requirements for tread depth on motorcycles, cycles over 50cc must have at least 1mm of tread across three-fourths of the width of the tread, with tread showing on the other quarter of the tyre. Motorcycles up to 50cc must have the entire original tread pattern showing.
