Express Insurance has some winter riding tips for those who choose to brave the wintry conditions on their two-wheeled machines.
- Keep performing scheduled maintenance on your bike.
- Clean your bike regularly. During the winter road salt can build up on bike, leading to corrosion if not removed through regular cleaning. Brake callipers should be a priority to strip and clean regularly, due to the possibility of road salt degrading braking capability. Bikes that are ABS-equipped should be checked to make sure of full functionality.
- If the bike is chain driven, check to make sure is at the correct tension and lubricated properly.
- Switch to winter tyres.
- Wear an ample amount of clothing for riding in frigid temperatures. There are electrically heated outfits powered off the motorcycle that are an excellent choice for winter riding.
- Wear high visibility outer garments such as a vest or a jacket with reflective emblems. Additionally, make sure that headlight and taillight lenses are clean so that bike can be seen by other motorists.
- Keep your visor clean and pack an extra dark-tinted visor if riding into the low winter sun.
