The week in review – British dominance and road trips

World Superbike Championship

It’s been a busy week in motorbikes as everyone gears up for the season.

Whether that means getting back on your bike after a winter layoff or the start of the racing season, there’s been plenty of news to get your teeth into over the past seven days.

It’s been a fairly busy few weeks for The Bike Insurer too. As well as a trip to Donington Park at the weekend, we’ve also been preparing for a special trip to the States and keeping on top of all the latest news.

1. The Bike Insurer goes to America

You may have seen but The Bike Insurer is going to America and we’re pretty excited.

The lucky staff member is Dave Jackson, our resident photographer, and he’ll be journeying across the West Coast.

As well as getting some brilliant photographs and videos, the journey will also give you an insight into a road trip – namely the worries, the logistics and what you can get up to.

We’ve kicked this off with two guides:

Getting insurance for your motorbike road trip.

Preparing for your motorbike road trip – packing.

2. Mobile phone use not going away

A survey into the use of mobile phones by drivers was published this week, revealing the number of drivers caught in the act and on their phone behind the wheel.

Some of the statistics are pretty shocking and it’s led to calls for stricter punishment and heavier policing to combat the issue.

3. Brits dominate in Australia

We kicked off the week with the news that four British riders were leading the World Superbike Championship after Round One in Oz.

While not getting too carried away with just two races down, the performance of Jonathan Rea, Leon Haslam and Chaz Davies in particular have got a lot of British racing fans excited.

In truth, we were probably a bit spoiled by the opening weekend after two dramatic races that went right to the wire. That won’t be the case every week but all the initial signs point to a competitive season.

4. Getting into racing

We spent Sunday at a cold and blustery Donington Park where an ACU Test day was taking place.

We spoke to Lewis Osler, one of our sponsored riders and an ACU Instructor, about what a test day entails and how you can get into racing.

You can watch Getting into racing – ACU test day here.

5. Lewis Osler gets grilled

While we were at Donington we also took the opportunity to put Lewis under the microscope.

Here he gives us some background into his racing career so far, as well as looking ahead to this season and the life of an amateur racer.
