Indian FTR1200

Indian confirms FTR1200 road bike for 2019 production.

Indian Motorcycles has confirmed a road-legal version of the FTR1200 Custom concept bike it showed last year will be on sale in 2019.

The American manufacturer made the announcement at the recent ‘Wheels and Waves’ custom bike show in Biarritz, France after months of speculation.

The FTR1200 Custom was revealed at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan last year and it’s based on the FTR750 competition bike the company races in the American Flattrack racing championship.

The smaller capacity FTR750 is a pure competition bike which would not be suitable as a road bike because of the high state of tuning in the engine.

Flattrack racing has a growing status in America with major participation from manufacturers who are trying to raise their profile with a younger audience and road bikes are now starting to spawn from these pared-back racing machines.

The FTR1200 will use a new 1200cc V-twin suitable for a road bike in terms of noise, emissions and service life demanded by global regulations.

President of Indian Motorcycles, Steve Menneto said: “When we unveiled the FTR1200 Custom at EICMA, we said we’d listen to feedback from riders around the world.

“Riders definitely have spoken and the response has been overwhelming. We’re proud and excited to announce that we will be putting the FTR 1200 into production.”

The FTR 1200’s full specification is yet to be announced, but it will combine a flat tracker style, housed in a trellis frame and powered by a new V-twin engine.
