How to check tyre tread depth and pressure

In the UK it’s a legal requirement for motorcycle tyres to have a minimum tread depth of 1mm across three quarters of the wheel.

If the tyres on your motorbike have a tread depth of less than that, you could be stopped by the police and charged.

And, you could lose grip on the road, drop your bike and smash it or yourself up, and nobody wants that.

That’s why it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the condition of your tyres, particularly tread depth, but also their pressure.

Every bike will have a recommended pressure for your tyres, depending on the type of riding you’re doing, and you should keep as close to that pressure as possible.

Again, handling and your bikes performance will change if your tyre pressure goes too far either side of the recommended amount.

Here, Lewis Osler, Thundersport 500 rider and mechanic, shows you how to check your bike’s tyres to make sure their tread depth and pressure is up to scratch.
