Why choose Vespa-Piaggio?

Vespa and Piaggio are two brands from the motorcycle industry that are intertwined.

That’s first and foremost because Piaggio is Vespa’s parent company but also because both Italian manufacturers focus purely on scooters and mopeds.

And they’re both big players in the market place but it is Vespa that leads the way.

Vespa

Piaggio has got some way to go before it catches up to Vespa in terms of fame and units sold.

Vespa is arguably the most famous name in scooters and mopeds, having sold more than 16 million units since it was founded in 1946.

And not only that, it’s also one of the most stylish two-wheel brands on the market, which is probably why a lot of other manufacturers have been inspired by Vespa’s famous monocoque, step-through design.

Piaggio

While most people link the Vespa brand with stylish, retro-chic scooters (and probably a bit more history than its owner) it’s Piaggio that has been around longer.

Despite being the older of the two manufacturers, Piaggio is better known for making modern scooters and mopeds that look typical in today’s market.

It’s a tactic that has worked well for the manufacturer, with the Italian manufacturer registering high sales volumes in mainland Europe and a growing number on UK roads too.

Although it's one of the bigger scooters around, it's still suitable for nipping around town on a daily commute. It's extremely comfortable, too, so long journeys are fine (I've done upwards of 300 miles in a single journey, stopping only for fuel, and didn't suffer at all).
The 498 cc engine is very responsive at all speeds -- it rips away from the lights as fast as most motorbikes, and still delivers if you need to open the throttle at 70 to overtake a dithering muppet.
Handling at slower speeds can be a little heavy, unsurprisingly, but that also lends it stability in windy and wet conditions. Aside from the points it loses visually (having two wheels at the front is never going to be cool, frankly) this is a fantastic all-round scooter and, after 14 months using it almost every day, I absolutely love it and will only trade up to a 'real' motorbike.
