Vespa and Piaggio are two brands from the motorcycle industry that are intertwined.
That’s first and foremost because Piaggio is Vespa’s parent company but also because both Italian manufacturers focus purely on scooters and mopeds.
And they’re both big players in the market place but it is Vespa that leads the way.
Piaggio has got some way to go before it catches up to Vespa in terms of fame and units sold.
Vespa is arguably the most famous name in scooters and mopeds, having sold more than 16 million units since it was founded in 1946.
And not only that, it’s also one of the most stylish two-wheel brands on the market, which is probably why a lot of other manufacturers have been inspired by Vespa’s famous monocoque, step-through design.
While most people link the Vespa brand with stylish, retro-chic scooters (and probably a bit more history than its owner) it’s Piaggio that has been around longer.
Despite being the older of the two manufacturers, Piaggio is better known for making modern scooters and mopeds that look typical in today’s market.
It’s a tactic that has worked well for the manufacturer, with the Italian manufacturer registering high sales volumes in mainland Europe and a growing number on UK roads too.
